News From Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs Legislative Team

The Las Trampas Creek Council of PTAs Legislation Team is dedicated to the continuous improvement of our children’s education and well being through the guidelines established by the California PTA. We strive to keep parents informed about vital state and federal education issues, assist parents in developing the tools and skills of effective education advocacy, encourage individual and collective participation in the democratic process, and vigorously advocate on issues that are of concern to local school communities.  Click Here for more information.

We begin the New Year with a new budget and new legislative year. On January 9, 2008 the Govenor’s office released the 2008-09 state budget.

MORE LETTERS NEEDED TO PROTECT SCHOOL FUNDING!

In February, the Lamorinda and Walnut Creek communities generated 4000 letters in less than two weeks, demanding that Proposition 98 school funding be protected.  We joined voices with tens of thousands of others, and now the Governor has started to acknowledge that public education funding is a priority.  At the recent Education Advocacy Day, we learned that grass roots pressure is the most effective means to edge the Governor and Legislature towards producing a budget that preserves Prop 98's minimum funding for schools.

Any parent, or voting citizen who opposes the cuts of $500,000 to $2.5 million that our local school districts each are now contemplating for the 2008-09 year, please download and sign this latest set of letters.  Follow the directions enclosed and drop them in the letter collection box located in the office or the envelope in  room 50.   If you have any questions, contact your school's Legislative Representative,  Lisa Hare.

In September, 2005, the California Legislature enacted the most rigorous nutrition standards in the Country for Foods and Beverages sold on K-12 Public School Campuses. These standards become effective in July, 2007.
